The Planning Department reviews development proposals with the guidance of the Comprehensive Plan and the City Code. The Comprehensive Plan is the city's long-range guide to how property should be developed or redeveloped. The City Code regulates many aspects of land-use including the type of use, requirements, setbacks, and general standards.
Requests for variances, conditional use permits, comprehensive plan amendments, zoning changes and site plans require review from the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council approval. Staff serves as a liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Economic Development Authority. The department also meets with builders and landowners regarding development, reviews sign permit applications, inspects single-family rental properties, and enforces code violations.
